To get the Dutch nationality and a Dutch passport, one has to have lived in the Netherlands for the last five years.

To be eligible for naturalisation as a Dutch national applicants must take a naturalisation test during the procedure. This involves determining whether they have a sufficient command of Dutch to be able to function in Dutch society. The naturalisation test consists of an oral and a written part. The person concerned must be able to conduct conversations and read simple notices, for example ballot papers. He or she must also be able to write brief, informal letters. People who are unable to take the test (or parts of the test) owing to a physical or mental disability can be exempted from it. The same is true of people who have already successfully completed the integration procedure under the Newcomers' Integration Act, provided they achieved level 2 or higher in the integration test.
