Villa de Albuquerque, now known as Albuquerque, New Mexico, was founded in 1706 by Spanish colonists led by Francisco Cuervo y Valdés. The settlement was established as a strategic outpost along the Rio Grande to support Spanish expansion in the region. Its name honors the Duke of Alburquerque, who was viceroy of New Spain at the time. The city has since grown into a major urban center in the southwestern United States.
