The concept of owning land was a foreign idea to most North American native peoples. They might use an area or hunt animalson it but did not own it.Europeans thought of land as a thing that could be bought and owned, not responsibly shared.

As a consequence they "bought" the land expecting the natives to move away because it was no longer theirs.
