There have been many unfortunate disasters in Nova Scotia, some of the worst are man made, such as the Halifax explosion the mining disasters in Springhill and most recently at the now defunct Westray coal mine in Stellarton . Since the question is about natural disasters then that must go to any number of storms over the last 2 centuries, Saxby Gale Monday, October 4, 1869, was a huge and terrible storm. The Groundhog Day Storm Monday, February 2nd, 1976 hit Yarthmouth and caused extensive damage. The most recent was Hurricane Juan which tore into central Nova Scotia September 28th 2003 which took out the power to 80 percent of the population for up to 10 days.
