Yes, although the bi-color theme (three bars of red-white-red) has been in use since 1824. The Spanish colonial flag was followed in 1820 by a British independence version (navy blue). This was followed by several versions of a bicolor with red starburst, in both vertical and horizontal forms. Until 1950, the modern civil flag also bore the National Coat of Arms in the middle -- this remains on the so-called National Flag.
