Nothing is really known about where Matthew preached or where he died. In the early years of Christianity, each important city or region claimed that one or another of the apostles had visited that city or region and preached there, thus lending prestige to the community. This sometimes results in a particular apostle being found in quite different regions at the same time, often even dying in different regions. The most common tradition for Matthew is that he did travel to Ethiopia and was burnt, stoned or beheaded there.
Matthew lived in Capernaum before being called to be a disciple. It is said that he later lived in Judea before travelling on missionary journeys.Capernaum, on the coast of the Sea of Galilee
Matthew preached the Gospel for many years after the death of Christ, traveling throughout the Holy Land and finally meeting a martyr's death at the hands of pagans in Ethiopia. His final verse is his epitaph. "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen." When the ancient world was divided among the disciples for the spreading of the Gospel, Matthew was given Ethiopia, which was the region west and south of the Euphrates River.
Saint Matthew was one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus. As a disciple, he followed Jesus, learned from His teachings, and spread the message of Christianity after Jesus' death. Saint Matthew also wrote the first Gospel in the New Testament, which bears his name and recounts the life and teachings of Jesus.
