The Visigoths were the western branch of the Goths. The Goths were original from Sweden and migrated through eastern Europe all the way to Ukraine. When the Huns invaded their land, some of the Goths asked the Roman emperor to allow them to settle in the lower Danube area of the Roman Empire to escape the Huns. This was granted. The rest of the Goths were conquered by the Huns and became their vassals. The Goths in the Roman Empire then came to be called Visigoths (Goths of the west) because at that point they lived further west than the other Goths. The other Goths came to be called Ostrogoths (Goths of the east).

They were a Germanic people which means that they were part of the linguistic family which gave rise to German, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and English. They originated from southern Sweden or the Polish coast. The were allowed to settle in the lower Danube area of the empire by emperor Valens. Later, King Alaric I had disputes with emperor Honorius and besieged Rome three times. On the third occasion he sacked it. He then went to Calabria (the toe of Italy) and died. It has been suggested that he wanted to go to Africa to disrupt food supplies. His successor moved to southwestern France. He helped the emperor to defeat a usurper in Gaul. He was granted land. He fought with the forces who defeated the Hun's attempt to invade Gaul. The Visigoths also expanded into Spain. The Franks pushed then out of Gaul. They became the Spanish aristocracy. The Visigothic kingdom in Spain lasted until Spain was conquered by the Moors.
