Australian shepards are dogs that were bred as sheep/horse/etc. herders. they are normally multicolored, some could be white and black only, or brown and tan only, or all of those shades. Most Australian shepards had their tails cut off as pups so the horses and other animals would not step on the tail and create an injury for the dog, or interferre with herding
