The first people to live in the Virgin Island were the Ciboney, Caribs, and Arawaks. Christopher Columbus was the first European to visit. The English, Dutch and later the French came to St. Croix. The Danish settled St. Thomas in 1672 and St. Johns in 1694. In 1917, St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John became the US Virgin Islands. The rest of the Virgin Islands are owned by the British.
