when it happens it is usually by locals to locals or by local ethnic groups to one of their own

kidnapping foreigners for monetary gain is -thankfully- not a practice that Costa Rica is known for

of the kidnappings that I've followed in the news this year most involve some type of prior relationship between the victim and the perpetrator (gambling debts, drug debts, etc.)

chances that you'll personally be kidnapped here are slim to none (especially now that you Americans have NO money!)
