Yes, there are still tribes that live in Texas today. The most recognized are the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas, the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, and the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas. These tribes maintain their cultural heritage and continue to engage in various traditional practices while also participating in modern society. Additionally, there are efforts to preserve their languages, traditions, and rights.
The Kickapoo were originally woodland Indians living Wisconsin and Illinois. Eventually they were removed to Missouri and then to Kansas. Eventually many migrated to Texas and then the the mountains of Mexico. The government tried to induce many to return to Indian country in Oklahoma and some did. Others still remained in Mexico.
Some of the native American Indians that lived in Texas in 1800's include Alabama-Coushatta, Apache, Anadarko, Arapahoe, Caddo, Biloxi, Cherokee andÊChickasaw. Others include Wichita, Waco, Tigua and Tonkawa.
There is no definite date as to the exact year when the Kickapoo Indians moved to Texas. Records show that they were granted land by the King of Spain in 1775, and this piece of land later became Texas.

Originally, the Kickapoo, a tribe of Native Americans, lived in areas of Michigan and Ohio. They ceded their lands and were placed in reservation in Kansas and Oklahoma by the American government.
The Kickapoo spoke a dialect of Algonquian. They built large communal dwellings for the winter time, and were accomplished hunter/gatherers. Four major groups of Kickapoo are still around. The Oklahoma Tribe web site is available in the links.
