Hogmanay, or the New Year, was traditionally of far more importance in Scotland than Christmas Day. My late grandfather was Scottish and he always used to tell us that he had to go to school on Christmas Day itself, not just Christmas Eve. This would have been around 1900. Christmas Day did not become a public holiday in Scotland until 1958. Compare the situation in England, where New Year's Day did not become a public holiday until 1974.
