Yes, Japan uses different types of renewable energy. They use wind energy from wind turbines installed along coastal areas such as by the central breakwater at Tokyo Bay. Heat and light from waste incineration plants and the Sun (solar and thermal energy) are also used in Tokyo. This is due to the good conditions that there are mostly strong winds in the area and it has a long coast.

Japan is a net importer of oil. Their entire production is an extremely amount of their use and all oil produced in Japan is for domestic consumption.

Japan is the #4 consumer of oil globally but ranked 49th in terms of oil production at 132,700 barrels/day; about the same as the oil-rich sultanate of Brunei, Italy, Germany, South Africa, Trinidad&Tobago, Turkmenistan and Peru, each.

By comparison, the US produces about the same as Saudia Arabia: 9 vs. 9.7 M barrels/day. Only Russia and Saudi Arabia are bigger oil producers than the US.

Whereas the US produces 9 M barrels, it consumes 20 M.

Whereas Japan produces 132,700, it consumes 4.4 M

Whereas China produces 4M, it consumes 7.7 M

However, a more important figure to consider is the relationship between production and consumption and the per capita consumption.

Every one is shocked by how much the US consumes. However, the US is actually 23rd in terms of consumption per capita. European countries Faroe Islands, Luxembourg, St. Pierre & Miquelon, Iceland, Greenland and Gibraltar consume more. Canada consumes more than the US.

Japan is 44th in per capita consumption.

In particular , the Mid-East oil-producing countries consume much more than the US.
