Most popes did not seek election, especially in modern times. It is a huge responsibility to take on and they basically lose their private lives. They live in a fish bowl, so to speak. It is impossible for them to please everyone and they must teach official doctrine of the Church. That upsets many people who feel the pope should 'lighten up.'
