Nowadays, most animals found in Mexico City are household pets (dogs, cats, birds, fish and the occasional exotic pet, like tarantulas and small reptiles). There are also "pest" animals, like pigeons, squirrels, rats and insects.

All these animals are doing quite well; however during the late 80's and 90's, air pollution levels were so high, that many small birds died due to thermal inversions occurring during winter months. The combination of chilly temperatures and airborne pollutants proved to be also toxic to other pets, young children and the elderly. This prompted several measures from the local government, such as car emissions controls and relocation of several polluting industries -- i.e. oil refineries and chemical plants -- to other regions within the country.
