Montpelier was being built and the community changed its name from Log Town to Forest Oak Post Office to Gaithersburg. Real growth would have to wait for almost 100 years when the B&O railroad came to town. Gaithersburg was named

after Benjamin Gaither who built his house in 1802 on the property where the Forest Oak tree grew for 300 years until it fell in 1997. The name Gaithersburg was incorporated on April 5, 1878.
