There is the national council (200 people) and the council of states (46 people). The Bundesrat (7 people) is the executive authority which (should) act on behalf of the previous two and also has a representative role toward other nations.

Both councils are voted by the public.

In contrary to other nations, the public can still become involved in the political process either by a referendum (requires 50'000 votes) which objects to a political decision and then requires a public vote or a public initiative (requires 100'000 votes) which if accepted requires the council to act accordingly. Thus the system is a direct democracy or also called pure democracy.
