The 169 islands of the Kingdom of Tonga have an estimated area of 289 square miles (742 km2). Only 36 of the islands have a resident population, at a density of about 360 residents per square mile (139 per square kilometer).

The largest island, Tongatapu, has an area of 99 square miles (257 km2), and the next largest islands include four or five about 25 to 35 square miles each.
