after the change to the gregorian calendar in Greece at 1924 Greeks say that the καλικάτζαροι - kalikatzari (Christmas trolls) stopped coming to trick people because the days that the trolls were coming were blessed days (Christmas is earlier than it was) so the trolls never make it to come. The superstition says that the kalikatzaroi are affright of the fire, the sound of burning salt, anything holy, holy water, the cross etc. Also they want to count and calculate anything so they are afraid of the sieve, if you leave it outside at night, they have to count the holes, so they stay there to do it and the morning comes, they hear the rooster and they disappear because they also are have fear for the morning sun.
...you must burn an old shoe. If you don't have it, salt may be burned instead :))
In Greece, to prevent the kallikantzori, mischievous creatures that emerge during the Christmas season, from playing tricks on people, one tradition is to keep a fire burning in the home. This fire is believed to deter the kallikantzori from entering, as they dislike the light and warmth. Additionally, some families place a colander on their doorstep, as the creatures are said to be unable to count past two and will spend the night trying to count the holes. These customs reflect a blend of folklore and festive practices aimed at warding off these troublesome beings.

Kallikantzori are mythical creatures from Greek folklore, often depicted as mischievous goblin-like beings that are said to emerge during the twelve days of Christmas. They are believed to inhabit the earth's underworld but come to the surface to cause trouble and mischief, particularly by damaging households and causing mayhem. Traditionally, people would protect their homes by making noise or placing certain objects, like a straws or a cross, to ward off these creatures. The belief in kallikantzori reflects themes of folklore surrounding the winter season and the interplay of light and darkness.
