Atlanta winters are very different from the North. I don't know about gloves and head-caps, but you WILL still need a coat for the mornings. It's cold at night and lukewarm during the day. January 2011 was a rare occurrence where we got so much snow and week-long temperatures from 15 to 30 degrees. The chill in the air comes mostly from the rain, which drenches the ground and causes the crocuses and daffodils to poke up and bloom about a month earlier than further north. The temperature during the day is about 50-60 degrees metro wide and 30-40 at night. Most of the time, you'll only need a light jacket or hoodie. Like the northern states, it IS gray and depressing. Unlike the northern states, spring weather usually starts around February 1.
