In 1763, Spain ceded Florida to Great Britain as part of the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Seven Years' War. However, Spain regained control of Florida in 1783 after the American Revolutionary War through another treaty. Therefore, while Britain claimed Florida in 1763, it was originally a Spanish territory before that time.

Spain controlled Florida from 1700-1763, and from 1783 to 1799, despite inroads from the Georgia colony and the French. Spain ceded Florida to Great Britain in 1763, but after the Revolutionary War, the Peace of Paris returned Florida to Spanish control. The US boundary with West Florida was agreed in 1795, and by the Adams-Onis Treaty (1819), the US took possession of all of Florida in 1821.

Great Britain took control of what is now the US State of Florida in 1763. This was a deal whereby it was in exchange for Havana Cuba to Spain after the Seven Years War. Britain divided Florida into East and West Florida. As part of end of the American Revolution, Britain evacuated Florida, thus ending "British Florida" in a manner of speaking.

Great Britain gained significant territorial and colonial advantages from defeating France in the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). The Treaty of Paris in 1763 granted Britain control over Canada and Florida, as well as various territories in India and the Caribbean. This victory helped establish Britain as the world's preeminent colonial power, leading to increased wealth and resources. However, the war also strained Britain's finances, ultimately contributing to tensions with its American colonies.
