The main theory was that it was the workings of the gods.
When Mount Vesuvius erupted in Pompeii in 79 AD, people initially fled or took shelter in their homes. The eruption buried the city in volcanic ash and debris, resulting in the tragic loss of thousands of lives. The event has since been well documented through archaeological excavations, providing insights into the devastating impact on the population.
No they were not. Pompeii was destroyed in 79 BC. It is now thought that Atlantis was the Greek island of Santorini, which in antiquity was called Thera. It is a volcanic island. Most of the island collapsed into the sea in a Volcanic eruption which is thought to have occurred in the mid-second millennium BC. But we have to keep in mind that the philosopher Plato in a book he wrote came up with the concept of an "ideal" society he called Atlantis and which according to him was sunk into the ocean as a punishment by the Gods right after they had supposedly tried to attack Athens. So Atlantis may also have been completely made up by him.
When Mount Vesuvius erupted and destroyed Pompeii in 79 A.D., the people of Pompeii were caught completely off guard. Many residents and visitors were unable to escape in time, resulting in the tragic loss of thousands of lives. The devastation of the eruption shocked the ancient world, but the city was eventually forgotten and buried until its rediscovery centuries later.
During the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, people tried to flee the area to escape the volcanic ash and debris. Some sought refuge in buildings or tried to shelter indoors. Many were ultimately overwhelmed by the pyroclastic flow and buried under the volcanic material.
When Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, the people of Pompeii initially sought refuge within the city, attempting to flee to safety. Many took shelter in their homes, while others tried to escape to the nearby coast. Some residents were able to evacuate, but a significant number were trapped by the volcanic ash and pyroclastic flows, leading to their eventual entombment in the debris. The eruption ultimately resulted in the preservation of the city under layers of ash, providing a unique archaeological site.
Pompeii was based on a lava plateau on the cost of Italy beside the river Sarnus and the mount Vesuvius. The surrounding lands were very fertile due to the volcanic soil and the river provided lots of water. It was founded by the Oscans who first found Herculaneum they were a tribe that came from the mountains. The Greeks came originally as traders but then ended up taking over Pompeii. They lost to the samnites who built up the towns defenses and made it into the city it was at the time of the eruption The plans they used were originally from a Greek architect called Hipodamus. The Samnites were originally Allies of Rome but tried to become independent They ended up loosing and became part of the Roman empire. Because of this much of Pompeii's land was given to Roman veterans who brought with them money and expertise causing Pompeii to thrive. In 79 AD Vesuvius erupted destroying Pompeii and it's neighbouring towns in just over 24 hours.
Pompeii was FIRST discovered by the king and queen of Naples in 1592. They did not actually excavate the site, they sent men tunneling down into the ash searching for treasures to put in their palace.
An archeologist called Fiorelli found that the hollow spaces underground in which the the bodies were found were actually imprints of the exact positions the people died in. So he filled the chambers with plaster which created casts of the bodies that looked exactly as the person had when they died, right down to their facial expressions and the details on their clothing.
they tried to run away
They didn't, in fact the eruption happened so quickly the bodies of the victims were preserved with lava and ash and still remain to this dayWhen they found the bodies the bones were in place as they were 20,000 years ago.
The Widow Douglas and Miss Watson took Huck in and tried to "sivilize" him. They taught him manners, etiquette, and tried to instill a sense of morality in him according to their societal standards.

Emergency response teams were deployed to provide assistance to those affected by the eruption, including helping with shelter and supplies. Additionally, authorities assessed the damage caused by the eruption to determine the extent of the impact on communities and infrastructure.
