by being treated in poor conditions. many were sent over as slaves but escaped. there husband's/ family/fathers came over got a job/money and sent it back over so there could come to join them. although they had some money they still had to have very low class ticket and bottom rooms. many lived illegally but others died. many lived in dread of being stole from, beaten up or death.
