Charles II of England, as a reward for helping him gain the throne, gave the land today known as the Carolinas two 8 nobles who in 1663 became the lord proprietors of the area. In 1729 South and North Carolina were formed from the original land. In 1670 a few colonists and planters started a town called Charleston (named after the king). The economy was initially based on trading furs, and growing crops for the West Indies. It soon became a royal colony and by the middle of the 18th century it was filled with plantations and it resembled the culture and economy of the West Indies.
