The Ming period of isolationism was bad for China, because there was bad trade, and the Chinese failed to keep up with the rest of the world . :(
For much of it's existence, China chose isolationism over world trade and commerce.

Isolationism
China often prevented outside contact to preserve its culture. China alternated between trade and extreme isolationism.
Isolationists remained quiet, at their peril.
Isolationism really did not affect the lives of the overwhelming majority of Chinese people; it had a much more profound effect on foreigners, such as Europeans, Indians, Southeast Asians, and other groups outside of China's tributary system. Most Chinese people were poor farmers using locally grown goods and ruled over by local governors who were subservient to the bureaucracy in Beijing. For the members in that bureaucracy, isolationism simply meant that they lost access to foreign gifts and materials, but this did not factor highly in their lives either. These foreign products were not terribly important and China had vast riches of its own. The country was, generally speaking, self-sufficient.
During the Golden Age of China, there were periods of isolationism, such as the Ming Dynasty's strict trade policies and the self-sufficiency promoted during the Song Dynasty. However, China also engaged in diplomatic and trade relations with neighboring regions like Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia. Overall, Chinese isolationism was not absolute and there were periods of openness and exchange with other civilizations.
