The Greek gods came into power by overthrowing the titans. Kronus or Cronus, the ruler of the titans, was overthrown by his children and cut into pieces by his own scythe. He had eaten every single one of his children after they were born to avoid the prophecy that his father, Uranus, made before he was killed by Cronus. Cronus was to be killed by his children, his rule short lived.
Zeus was saved by his mother Rhea, she was upset with Cronus for eating all her children and saved Zeus by taking him to Earth and hiding him.
When he was old enough to defend himself he was presented to his father and accepted. Later he and his mother were able to give Cronus a mixture that made him sick, throwing up the gods and goddesses that he had eaten.
A war broke out between the titans and the gods, in the end the titans were silenced and the gods had control.
So the greek gods could rule. The greek gods fought the titans to gain control and won. The greek gods then ruled. The titans went to tarturas.
