Phytoplankton live in the Southern Ocean that surrounds Antarctica, and this is their natural habitat. In the Southern Ocean -- and in other large ocean areas, their survival on minerals and photosynthesis is limited by their access to iron.

They do, however, survive in the Southern Ocean and form the base of the short food chain there.

Remember, liquid water is always warmer than the ambient air in Antarctica.
