During the Ice Ages the overall sea level fell as a proportion of the planet's water became locked up in ice caps and ice sheets. As a result a land/ice bridge formed in the area around the Bering Strait making it possible for early Man to enter N. America. Other early settlers probably arrived by canoe/kayak.
