rivers are a source of water obviously your nation cant prosper if everyone is busy fetching water. all major cities even today are near a water source. more importantly rivers make trade a million times easier. it is a million times easier to carry 100 tons of cargo on a large boat even if you have to go around the continent then to get 10,000 donkeys or camels to carry the same amount of things (take into account you dont have to feed a ship and a ship is wind powered). in the past because of this, caravan trade usually carried expensive light weight items such as spices and perfumes while ships would carry building materials, food and bulkier items (which is still more or less followed today). and back then trade was life or death for example Egypt as an easy example can grow alot of food but has no trees. it would import wood through sea routes.
