It depends on how your horse was trained, and his level of training. The standard cue for going faster is to either squeeze with your calves or give a little kick. For a lazy horse that no one has taken the time to properly train to a light squeeze or gentle kick, you may have to use spurs or a whip.

Some horses are also trained to respond to a kissing sound, a cluck, moving the reins forward (for western horses) or shifting your weight slightly forward.
