em khong yeu anh -- female to older male

anh khong yeu em -- male to younger female

toi khong yeu ban -- literally "i don't love friend" most formal way to say i don't love you to someone that you are not close to.

Wrong, the use of "em" and "anh" together like that automatically indicates at least romantic feelings of lovefor the other (regardless of age and even if the word for love is not used in the sentence), thus saying either of the first examples is a complete contradiction and would confuse a native Vietnamese speaker! If you don't love the other person at least romantically never use this pairing of pronouns in Vietnamese!

Used singly "em" and "anh" meaning you (with "toi" meaning I) indicates respect for slightly younger female or slightly older male respectively. Used singly in a very slightly different context "em" is the pronoun for a young child of either gender.

My Vietnamese girlfriend taught me this romantic use of "em" and "anh" and insists that I must use them with her but she never uses them with me, only "anh" as I am slightly older. This is because our relationship is currently asymmetric: I am in love with her but she is not yet in love with me. She does not say that she does not love me, just that she has never yet been in love with anyone and thus does not know what it is like.

She also insists on the use of the platonic boyfriend/girlfriend words never the romantic boyfriend/girlfriend words at this time.
