The exact translation is "God morn !" ( go mawn ) but this is not what Norwegians most often say in the morning.

The usual is "God dag" , literally good day. The pronounciation varies by region, and can be :-

  • Go dar
  • Go darg
  • Goddar
  • Goddarg
  • Got-darg
  • Goddargoddar ( almost forgot Hallingdal ! )

The other common greeting is Hej - hej ! ( hay hay ).

This sounds a bit off-putting; the good news is that most Norwegians speak very good english.
