A suitor is like an old fashioned boyfriend or girlfriend, except more formal in some cases. In a court - not law or criminal but a royal court- a prince or princess would have suitors who could possibly become their consorts and then husband or wife. They get to know each-other after spending some time together. If they did not appeal to the other they would be dismissed. If they were liked they would be kept until the 'suit-ee' decided whom they wanted.

You use a suitor by... Well the same way you start a relationship. You date a few times and see if you like each-other. However the date is formal. No intercourse is needed.
