Quails are short tailed, chunky game birds. Usually less than ten inches long. Some quail are the chukar, bobwhite, California and Gambel's quails, Montezuma quail. The bobwhite is the only eastern quail.

It probably would have been a californian quail (most likely male).

If the landscape on Little House doesn't look like Minnesota there is a good reason for it. Most of the exteriors for the series were filmed east of Los Angeles near Simi Valley.
