Technology was important to Japan's expansion of its industrial base following its defeat in WW II. One of the most important economic moves it made was in challenging the market in the United States for a share in the automobile business. This required advanced methods in technology to produce high quality cars. Labor in Japan was not "cheap" and it also had to compensate for the costs of transporting their cars from Japan over the Pacific Ocean to the US west coast. Therefore technology was used wherever it could in order to reduce the cost of automobile and truck production.
