A nova forms in a binary star system where one star is a white dwarf and the other is a companion star, often a red giant. The white dwarf's strong gravitational field pulls hydrogen gas from the companion star, accumulating it on its surface. When the pressure and temperature become sufficiently high, nuclear fusion ignites, leading to a rapid increase in brightness as the outer layers of the white dwarf are ejected into space. This explosive event marks the nova, temporarily outshining entire galaxies.
A Neutron Star
Elements heavier than iron are formed in super-nova explosions.
Nova Scotia was formed in 1710 when the British officially took control of the territory from the French. It became a separate colony in 1760 and was one of the first three Maritime provinces established in Canada. Nova Scotia joined the Canadian Confederation in 1867.
The Orion Nebula was not formed from a single supernova or nova event. It is a stellar nursery where new stars are currently being formed. The nebula is created by the glowing gas and dust illuminated by newly formed stars within it.
