The Upper East Side has always been synonymous with wealth, while the Upper West Side has always been a lot more bohemian and intellectual, probably due to its close proximity to Columbia University. It is also much more ethnically diverse than the Upper East Side. In the last 25 years, however, the Upper West Side has gotten progressively more and more posh, and now rent and condo prices on the Upper West Side are quite often even more expensive than on the Upper East Side. The result of this is a sociology thesis just begging to be written, as housing projects populated entirely by poor blacks and Latinos are often situated right next to, or just across the street from, new luxury condominiums populated entirely by rich whites.
