Water is moved by canals, pipes, tunnels, and natural channels for very long distances in many parts of California. Pumping is often involved at great expense of energy, such as for pumping State Water Project water over the Tehachapi Mountains to the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Reservoirs also contribute to conveyance, such as conveyance for Central Valley Project water from the Trinity River through Whiskeytown Reservoir to the Spring Creek Tunnel and thence the Sacramento River. The Delta serves to convey large quantities of water from the Sacramento River to state and federal pumps into canals going south.
