Olympia, Greece began sometime in 800 BC (the Games began in 776 BC and ended in 393 AD by decree of a Christian Roman Emperor Theodosius I) there is some thought that Christians used the settlement until sometime in 600 AD.
The exact site was re-discovered in 1766 by the English antiquarian Richard Chandler.
