The Crusades began around the year 1000, over a thousand years ago. At that time there were no railways, no automobiles, no airplanes, or other modern vehicles. The fastest method of travel on land was by horse, however, many crusaders did not even own a horse and therefore had no way to travel other than by walking. Added to the lack of efficient vehicles, was the problem of the great political disunity and general chaos of the medieval world. There were few hotels at which travellers could stay overnight, or other conveniences which modern travellers would expect. Travel was always difficult, in the middle ages.
