Size , weight, value, rout distance and speed are all factors to be determined prior to determining the carrier. The United States Postal System provides excellent service for a set price. Unite Parcel, FedEx and other carriers excel at overnight and next day delivery but the price paid is staggering for heavy or bulky items. For example:

  • A one ounce letter might cost $3.00 to deliver over-night by many carriers.
  • A one pound package (for example a fruitcake to Grandma at Christmas) will cost about $20.00 for the same fast transit or $5.00 if they have a week to complete delivery. For Overnight delivery to Adak Alaska may be sligtly more expensive.
  • A one ton cube of lead could make the sme transit in a day for $40,000.00 and in ten days for 1/10th of that cost. Precious metals like Gold or Platinum would be more expensive becaus of added security and insurance rates,
  • Bulky objects like a cubic acre of intact New Jersey limestone would cost a bundle to move, but somone would figure it out and bid on the project.
  • Keep in mind that the "Hope Diamond" was once carried by the US Postal Service.
