Bismarck was formed in 1872 when the railroad reached the Missouri River. It was originally named Edwinton, but the named was changed to Bismarck a year later to honor German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, in the hopes of attracting German immigrants.Bismarck became the capital of Dakota Territory in 1883 and the state of North Dakota in 1889.
