Buy a ticket at Grand Central Station to Stamford. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, all trains on the New Haven line (which runs from Grand Central to New Haven, CT) will stop in Stamford, since it's a major stop. Some trains on the New Haven line will stop at smaller stations in Westchester County before reaching Stamford, and others are express, with Stamford being the first stop.
Last time I made the trip, it cost about $10 one way, off peak. Peak travel times (like rush hour) will add a couple dollars to the fare, as will buying the ticket on the train as opposed to buying it before you board. The base ticket price is probably more now, since it's been a few years since I made the trip.
