Japanese is an intricate language of complex grammar, seemingly endless kanji to memorize, unusual pronunciation and tonal flow (if you are a native English speaker), and deeply cultural "subtleties" which dramatically change the language depending on social circumstance. I was once told that after a decade of study, I will still hardly understand a conversation between two fluent Japanese in an elevator (just for perspective). If you totally immerse yourself, it makes any language easier to learn; but from personal experience, Japanese is an extremely difficult language to master and requires years of dedication--the actual time will vary from person to person, but you can count on "a while."
