Compulsory schooling starts in the academic year during which a child has his or her fifth birthday - this class is generally called the Reception class. There are then subsequent years numbered one to six. This makes 7 years in a primary school.

Many schools also operate a nursery class for the academic year before Reception, making 8 years in a primary school with a nursery.
