Alaska has the longest coastline among the continental U.S. states. Its coastline stretches for over 6,600 miles along the Pacific Ocean to the south and west and the Arctic Ocean to the north, due to its unique geography with numerous bays, fjords, and islands.
The US Pacific coastline is 7,623 statute miles long based on the general coastline.
The Continental or Contiguous US means the states that touch each other. The contiguous United States are the "Lower 48" States on the continent of North America that are south of Canada, plus the Capital (Washington, D.C.) The term excludes the states of Alaska and Hawaii, and all off-shore territories and possessions, such as Puerto Rico. There are 50 US states, but only 48 are 48 contiguous states. Alaska and Hawaii are the only 2 that are not part of the mainland and do not have a border with the other 48 states.
The United States has approximately 19,924 km of coastline.
The problem as stated: Given - 2 states are NOT continental. Given - there are 50 states. Find - % of states that ARE continental. 50 = Total states -02 = Non-continental states --- 48 = Continental states 48 of 50 states are continental. 48 / 50 (expressed as a fraction) 48/50 = x/100 (setting up the equation) 48*100 = 50*x (by cross multiplication.) 4800/50 = x (divide both sides by 50) 96 = x (solving the equation) 48/50 = 96/100 (substituting for x) 96/100 = 96% (fraction written as a percentage) This may be, according to popular but incorrect usage. Alaska is on the same continent as 48 other states and is therefore part of the Continental US.
Canada is north of the 48 continental states, and east of Alaska.
It means the 48 contigious states, Washington, D.C., and Alaska but not Hawaii.
Well Alaska is part of the CONTINENTAL USA but not one of the contiguous lower 48 - so I say it is Juneau Alaska. Of the lower 48 it is Augusat Maine
49 of the 50 U.S. states are on the continent (all except Hawaii). 48 of them are contiguous. Alaska is continental but not contiguous.
