In a way, only Mugabe knows - most people in their eighties would be happy to retire. But I think a large part is the corruption surrounding him. Many senior members of the government and army are only in their positions because Mugabe is in power - so it is in their interest to keep Mugabe there. Mugabe was hailed as a hero after the Bush War led to the black majority rule of Zimbabwe. He probably still thinks of himself as a hero and he is surrounded by people who insist he is the only person who can run the country.
