The official name for the Big Ben Tower is 'The Elizabeth Tower', as it was named for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012. Before that, it was simply called the 'Clock Tower'. Construction of the tower began on 28th September 1843 and, after significant delays in construction of both the tower and the clock, the tower was considered complete after 16 years, when the Great Bell (also nicknamed Big Ben) chimed for the first time on July 11th 1859.
