The needles are really not that bad. They are placed in the antecubital area of each arm (where the bend is in your arm) For me, they used a 16 gauge in one arm and an 18 gauge in the other. It stings for just a few seconds, then the pain goes away. I would say for me the pain of the needles was maybe a 1 out of 10. The needles stay in your arms through out the entire donation which can last up to two hours. They do not replace them with a plastic catheter as is done in an IV, so you have to keep your arms straight throughout the entire donation.
