Nine years mandatory education - not necessarily in a school, since home teaching is allowed (though extremely rare).

If ones aims for an academic education, the school is typically followed by three years in the Gymnasium.

Interesting facts: Within OECD Denmark is the country with the oldest average age for university graduates. This is due to a historical tendency to have several sabbatical years between Gymnasium and University, and a few incentives to complete the studies quickly: Education is free and the state grants are generous by international standards (€700 K / mth if one lives by oneself, half if you live at home with your parents).
